A major 6.4 earthquake hit Sidorukun, Indonesia on Monday, September 3, 2012, at 18:23:04 UTC, at a depth of 8.8 km (5.5 mi); and 8 major earthquakes (>6.4) have rocked the world in the last 8 days! 

I have often thought that if we reach the point of an average of a major earthquake per day in one week, we have hit an astronomical high point in major earthquake activity.  Here we are!

Major 6.4 and 6.3 earthquakes hit Iran only 11 minutes apart on Saturday, August 11, 2012, at 12:23:17 and 12:34:35 UTC, at depths of 9.9 km (6.2 mi) and 9.8 km (6.1 mi) respectively.  Three major (>5.9) earthquakes have hit in less than 24 hours!  There have been 18 lower intensity aftershocks so far.

 USGS:  A major 6.0 magnitude earthquake hit Eastern Turkey on Sunday, October 23, 2011, at 20:45:37 UTC, at a depth of  9.8 km (6.1 mi).  Since the 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Eastern Turkey at 10:41:21 UTC today, four other sizable earthquakes have hit Eastern Turkey today, as follows:  a 5.6 at 10:56:50 UTC; another 5.6 quake at 11:32:41 UTC; a 5.1 at 18:10:46 UTC; then this 6.0 quake at 20:45:37.  A total of 5 today!

Four Earthquakes Hit the Philippines

National Weather Service Update:  The strongest quake in the Philippines has been upgraded to 6.6.  A tsunami warning was cancelled, although the National Weather Service warns the public to stay away from beaches and advises it is not safe for fishermen to go out to sea.
